Popular variety for large heads with delicious fleshy scales, on relatively compact, tidy plants. Also looks impressive in the flower garden. For indoor sowing
When February to March.
Where In trays of moist compost.
How Sow thinly and cover with a fine layer of compost. Cover with glass, polythene or propagator lid. Keep at approx. 15-20°C. Seedlings appear 14-28 days.
Care Remove cover when seedlings appear. When large enough transplant to individual pots. Gradually acclimatise plants to outside conditions from late May (avoid frosts). Transplant 90cm apart in final position in June.
Harvest July to October, the following year.
For outdoor sowing
When March to April.
Where In a prepared seed bed.
How Sow thinly in rows 30cm apart. Cover lightly with fine soil. Firm gently, keep moist and weed free.
Care When large enough thin to 30cm apart. Plant out 90cm apart in final position in September to October.
Harvest July to October, the following year and for a further 4-5 years. Cut heads just as the first upper scales begin to separate.
