Attractive and interesting, this plant is grown mainly for the charming red ‘lanterns’ that form after flowering. May be cut and dried in late summer. For indoor sowing
When February to April.
Where In trays of moist compost.
How Sow thinly, cover with a fine layer of compost. Cover with glass, polythene or propagator lid. Keep at approx. 18-21°C. Seedlings appear 21-30 days.
Care Remove cover when seedlings appear. When large enough transplant 45cm apart to further trays or pots of compost. Gradually acclimatise to outside conditions (avoid frosts). Transplant 45cm apart in flowering position from summer onwards.
Flowers July to October, the following year.
For outdoor sowing
When May to July.
Where In a prepared seed bed.
How Sow thinly in rows 20cm apart. Cover lightly with fine soil. Firm gently, keep moist and weed free.
Care When large enough thin to 10cm apart. Transplant 45cm apart in flowering position from September to October.
Flowers July to October, the following year. To dry; cut as lanterns start to colour and hang upside down.
