A fascinating architectural plant with long thistle-like purple-blue flower heads and attractive, deeply toothed foliage. Excellent spot plant and dried flower. For indoor sowing
When January to April.
Where In trays of seed compost.
How Sow thinly, cover lightly with 0.5cm of fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist. Place in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Germination may be erratic. Seedlings appear 14-35 days. To promote germination cover with glass, polythene or a propagator lid and place outside for 2-3 weeks. Then return to cold frame or greenhouse at approx. 15°C.
Care When large enough transplant singly to 7.5cm pots. Gradually acclimatise to outside conditions. Transplant 30cm apart in flowering position from September to October. Keep moist and weed free.
Flowers June to October the following year. Do not allow plants to become waterlogged in winter.
