Broad Bean - Bunyards
Bunyards were first introduced over 100 years ago. It is a heavy cropping, white seeded type with long pods of 8 or 9 beans. The beans have a good flavour and a good freezer.
Sow from February to April. Early sowings in pots in the greenhouse or under cloches in the growing site. Later sowings direct into the growing site 5cm deep in rows 60cm apart. Glasshouse seedlings should be transplanted to the growing site in March, 10cm apart in rows 45cm apart. Outdoor sowings should be thinned to 10cm apart, and the thinnings can be transplanted to make extra rows. When the first beans form, remove the top 6cm to help discourage black fly. Harvest once pods become filled with succulent tasty young beans. Ready to harvest from July onwards.
