Loofah Seeds – Luffa cylindrica
Loofah Seeds produce vigorous climbing plants with yellow flowers followed by long green fruits. Known botanically as Luffa cylindrica, this unusual member of the cucumber family can be grown for its young edible fruits or allowed to mature fully to produce the familiar natural loofah sponge.
When harvested young, the fruits can be cooked and eaten much like courgettes. For sponge production, fruits are left on the vine until fully mature and beginning to dry, when the outer skin can be removed to reveal the fibrous structure inside.
Loofah needs a long, warm growing season, so in the UK it is best started early indoors and grown in a greenhouse, polytunnel or particularly warm sheltered position. The vigorous vines require sturdy support and plenty of room to climb.

How to Grow Loofah Seeds
Sow Loofah Seeds indoors from February to April to provide the plants with the longest possible growing season.
Soaking the seeds in warm water for around 24 hours before sowing can help encourage germination.
Sow individually into pots approximately 1–2cm deep and keep warm at around 20–25°C. Germination can take time, so maintain warmth and avoid keeping the compost excessively wet.
Pot seedlings on as they develop and keep them in warm, bright conditions.
Plant into their final growing position once conditions are reliably warm. In the UK, a greenhouse or polytunnel provides the most dependable conditions for fruit development.
Provide strong trellis, wires or another sturdy support for the vigorous climbing vines.
Water regularly during active growth and feed once flowering and fruit development begin.
Loofah Growing Tips
Start seeds early because Loofah requires a long growing season.
Provide plenty of warmth and sunlight.
Use sturdy supports for the vigorous climbing stems.
Keep plants consistently watered without waterlogging the soil.
Allow fruits to mature fully on the plant when growing them for sponges.
For eating, harvest fruits while they are young and tender.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you grow Loofah sponges from seed?
Yes. Luffa cylindrica fruits develop a fibrous interior when allowed to mature fully, which can be dried and prepared for use as a natural loofah.
Are Loofah fruits edible?
Young, tender fruits are edible and can be cooked as a vegetable. Mature fruits become increasingly fibrous and are instead used for producing sponges.
Can Loofah be grown in the UK?
Yes, but it requires plenty of warmth and a long growing season. A greenhouse or polytunnel generally provides more reliable conditions than outdoor growing.
Does Loofah need support?
Yes. The plants are vigorous climbers and need a strong trellis, wires or similar support.
When should Loofah Seeds be sown?
Start seeds indoors from February to April to give plants enough time to grow and mature their fruits.
