Broad Bean - Karmazyn

This is a very unusual and attractive pink seeded variety, which is popular in Eastern Europe. The beans have an outstanding flavour and are high yielding. The beans are best when small so they cook quickly and retain much of their pretty colour. The plants reach the height of 60cm, and are robust and relatively compact, making them ideal for slightly more exposed locations.

Sow outdoors from February to May, where they are to crop, 5cm deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-cultivated, fertile soil, which has already been watered. To make the best use of space, sow seeds 23cm apart, in a wide row in a zigzag pattern, leaving a space of 60cm between each row. Seedlings usually appear in 10-18 days. Water well until plants are established. Successional sowings will ensure a continuous supply and longer harvest. Or sow indoors from February to April, 2.5cm deep into individual pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20°C is ideal. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions, avoiding frosts, before planting out, 23cm apart during April-May. Harvest from June to August.
