Celery - Green Sleeves
Green sleeves is an almost stringless celery which has pale green flesh, a great crunch and flavour. It is easy to grow, stands well and is slow to bolt.
Sow indoors from March to May, 0.5cm deep in a tray of compost. Water well and place in a cold frame, greenhouse or on a cool windowsill. A temperature of 15-20°C is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 14-21 days. Transplant seedlings to other trays, 5cm apart, when large enough to handle. Always handle by a leaf, never by the stem. Grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions before planting out, 25cm apart, from May to June, into rich, well dug soil. Allow 30cm between rows. Water well. Harvest from August to November.
