How to Grow Leek ‘Vernal’

Sow seeds indoors or outdoors from March to April into fine seed compost. Sow thinly and cover lightly. Keep compost moist and grow seedlings on until pencil thickness.

Transplant young plants to their final position from May to June. Plant deeply into holes around 15 cm deep, spacing plants 15–20 cm apart, with 30 cm between rows.

Grow in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Water during dry spells and keep beds weed-free.

Harvest leeks as required from December onwards, lifting as needed through winter and early spring.
