Birdsfoot Trefoil - Lotus Corniculatus
Birdsfoot Trefoil is a grassland perennial. This plant is part of the legume family so does well on soils with low nitrogen levels. The flowers are yellow with red buds. The seed pods are said to look like birds feet. Birdsfoot trefoil is a long lived perennial and is suitable for both meadows and, because of its tolerance of cutting or grazing, flowery lawns. It is mainly pollinated by bees and is the larval food plant for a number of moths and butterflies.
It is easily grown from seed, to get the best germination a period of light scarification is beneficial.
