Winter Squash Waltham Butternut Seeds

Winter Squash Waltham Butternut Seeds produce attractive pear-shaped fruits with smooth buff-coloured skin and rich orange flesh. This traditional butternut squash variety is valued for its sweet, nutty flavour and firm texture, making it a useful crop for autumn and winter cooking.

The mature fruits are ideal for roasting, soups, curries, stews and baking. Once properly ripened and cured, Waltham Butternut also stores well, allowing home-grown squash to be enjoyed well beyond the summer growing season.

The vigorous plants need plenty of room to spread and perform best in a warm, sunny position. They are well suited to kitchen gardens, allotments and raised beds where their trailing growth has space to develop.

How to Grow Winter Squash Waltham Butternut Seeds

Sow Winter Squash Waltham Butternut Seeds indoors from April to May in individual pots of seed compost.

Sow seeds approximately 2cm deep, placing them on their side, and keep warm while they germinate.

Grow seedlings on in bright, frost-free conditions. Gradually harden them off before planting outside after all risk of frost has passed.

Plant into fertile, well-drained soil in a warm, sunny and sheltered position, allowing plenty of room for the trailing plants to spread.

Water regularly during dry weather, particularly while plants are flowering and fruits are swelling. Feeding during the growing season can help support fruit development.

Allow the squash to mature fully on the plant. Harvest in autumn before the first hard frosts, leaving a section of stalk attached to each fruit.

Winter Squash Growing Tips
